Formed to raise funds for the first black university, in 1873 the Singers travelled throughout the UK.
Sponsored by Lord Shaftesbury, president of the Ragged School Union, they sang at Barnardo’s Hope Place ragged school and to Queen Victoria. Their plantation spirituals made a deep impression on the British public.
